The Challenge: Operational Blind Spots & Fragmented Data
Despite having a vast repository of engineering documentation, the operator faced a fundamental data challenge: the lack of a consolidated, “single source of truth” for their assets. Without a master asset register, maintenance planning and compliance reporting were laborious and prone to error.
Key Pain Points:
- The “Phantom” Asset List: The facility lacked a comprehensive Asset Register. There was no centralized digital inventory of critical components like piping, vessels, and valves, making it difficult to track lifecycle status or integrity risks.
- Format Fragmentation: Essential engineering intelligence was locked inside static files. 3000 plus Process and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) existed in a chaotic mix of formats—some were PDFs, others were simple JPEGs—rendering them unsearchable and disconnected from any integrity database.
- Manual Bottlenecks: Engineers had to manually search through thousands of individual files to locate specific equipment tags, resulting in significant efficiency losses.
The Solution: Mass Extraction and Intelligent Digitization
Visionnect undertook a massive data consolidation project to transform static drawings into a dynamic, searchable asset database. Our approach focused on high-volume extraction and precise digitization.
- Large-Scale Drawing Ingestion
We processed a massive volume of legacy documentation, ingesting over 3,000 individual P&IDs from various static formats (PDF, JPEG, TIFF) into our processing ecosystem.
- Intelligent Digitization & Tagging
Using our advanced recognition software and engineering expertise, we didn’t just scan the drawings; we digitized them. We converted “flat” images into intelligent, data-rich digital schematics.
- Building the Register (The 100,000 Tag Milestone)
Through this digitization process, we successfully extracted and cataloged over 100,000 individual asset tags from 3000 plus P&ID’s. This massive dataset was structured and categorized to build a robust, complete Asset Register covering all:
- Piping Systems
- Pressure Vessels
- Valves and Control Instruments
